Toy haulers became more elaborate and comfortable due to the suggestions and demands of prospective buyers. ![]() As they did so, avid camping and outdoors enthusiasts and hardcore travelers of all sorts began chiming in with their own ideas and requirements. Seeing there was a strong, viable market for toy haulers, RV manufacturers and associated brands started coming up with their own designs, offering an unprecedented degree of choices and luxury to the outdoors community. One prominently noted one was a 1983 Fleetwood Terry travel trailer which had been rigged with a rear lift, but all sorts of designs and modifications were attempted, some of them surprising, some tragic and some simply hilarious. Soon, backyard hobbyists, shade tree mechanics and garage-based engineers started making all sorts of modifications to existing travel trailers and RVs. While it was a definite step in the right direction toward merging form and function, it lacked a number of comfort, safety and security features which we take for granted in today’s designs.Īt this point, the nationwide race was on. As a result, they were simple affairs, including travel trailers with the backs cut off, modified horse trailers and even manufactured mobile homes which had undergone extreme makeovers to serve their new function! Early toy hauler travel trailer designs served two simple purposes: to keep motorcycles and performance vehicles in pristine condition/ and to provide storage for the various tools and parts which might be needed for maintenance and on- and off-track repairs. However, we think the first toy haulers were used in early motorsports like NASCAR and Motocross.
